Day 185 – Farewell 2009

December 31st, 2009 No comments

New Years eve…. or old years farewell.  Anyway you look at it at 11:59:59 tonight it’s out with the old and in with the new.  This has been a long and interesting year and the end of a decade. So tonight when you pop open the champagne and toot your horns and toast to the new year ahead.  Reflect on the year that just ended, look at the ups, look at the downs, get closure and move on to 2010 with a smile.

Thank back on the 5 best things of 2009, right then down and then use them to grow in the year ahead.  Focus on the positive, no matter how hard the past year might have been…. Things can only get better.

Ok, enough with the philosophy, go out and party like its 2009.

Day 184 – End of a Decade

December 30th, 2009 No comments

I remember in 1999 as the world waited for the new millennium to begin.  Everyone was all freaked about Y2K, that the world would come to an end because computers would not be able to handle the change over to 21st century.  Well here we are 10 years later.  We survived (Y2K that is).  Who would have thought that a 4 digit year would end up being the least of our worries in the 00’s.

This first decade of the 21st century left us with “hanging chads”, “sun-prime loans “, Enron, World-com, Tyco and a Madoff of a man named Bernie not to ever forget that fateful day on 9/11/01.

What a decade we just emerged from, we can only hope that the next 10 years and more, bring us only joy not tsoris.

An ode to a decode to forget

Day 183 – Resolutions

December 29th, 2009 No comments

With just 3 days left in 2009 it’s time to start thinking about your resolutions for the new year.  Not that resolutions mean anything these days, but it does give you something to think about over the next few days and something to strive for as the new decade begins.  As George Clooney says in “Up in the Air”, “have a number in mind”… In this case that number should be how long you are able to hold on to those resolutions.

Set realistic goals and you won’t have a problem hitting them.  I set a goal (it was not a New Years goal, but it was my goal) to publish at least one new doodle every day and I have kept it up for 6 months already.

The count down to 2010 begins.

Day 182 – Oscar Contenders

December 28th, 2009 No comments

Last week I made mention of how much I love this time of the year from a movies perspective, because all the best movies make there appearances around Christmas in order to make the Oscar deadline.  This is also the time that all the nominations for movie awards are announced.  So it’s an exciting time for a genuine movie buff.

I took advantage of the long weekend to take in 3 strong Oscar contenders and caught a fourth on DVD.   I finally got a chance to see “Invictus” and say what you like, Clint Eastwood knows how to make a great movie.  I was choked up many times (must be the South African blood running through my veins).  Regardless of whether you care for Rugby or not, it’s a human story and very beautifully told.  Morgan Freeman is incredible as Madiba and even though some have said Matt Damon is not deserving of his various nominations.  He does an amazing understated piece of acting.  He has the Afrikaner accent and mannerisms down pat.  Do yourself a favor and see it.

And for those that never saw my doodle tribute to Neslon Mandela, which I did on his 90th birthday.  As a tribute to Invictus, here it is again.

The Nelson Mandela Doodle

I also saw “Up in the Air” & “A serious Man”  and both were brilliant movies.  “Up in the Air” is superb and deserves a blog entry on it’s own.  I loved Juno and I love this one even more.  Jason Reitman has made another unbelievable movie and this one is a strong Oscar contender, for acting, writing, directing and many more.

Ok, enough about movies for now (because I can go on and on).  Here’s the doodle for today:

Day 181 – 2009 the homestretch

December 27th, 2009 No comments

This has been a crazy year, so many ups and downs.  So many people are wishing the year away, what a way to end the first decade of the 21st century.  We still have one more week to go, before we can say goodbye to 2009.  The last week of the year is always a little unsettling.  Most people are coming off the high of the Christmas holiday and gearing up for whistles, party hats, fireworks and crystal balls as they ring in a new year.

So enjoy the last week of 2009 and clear the slate, gear up for a new decade and good things to come in 2010.

In addition we are almost 6 months into the Doodle Daily project.  Later in the week I will reflect on how the first 6 months have been.

The motto is Keep the doodles coming.

Day 180 – Boxing Day

December 26th, 2009 No comments

Today is Boxing Day.  What is Boxing day?  I know it as the holiday that comes the day after Christmas, but in all the years growing up in South Africa, no one could ever tell what the day celebrated.  Having lived in the US the last 20 years, boxing day has no meaning, it is not a holiday, it is just another day.  So the question of what boxing day is will go unanswered yet again.

Just like today’s doodle has no meaning, it’s just another doodle.  Let’s call it the Boxing Day Doodle.

Day 179 – Chestnuts Roasting on an …

December 25th, 2009 No comments

There is something about the Christmas holiday, that even if you don’t celebrate it, it is still special day.  The atmosphere is festive and fires are crackling,  Lights shimmer everywhere you go.  The Tree is brightly decorated.  People are happy.  People feel the urge to give, to share, to help out.  Well most do.

I know I moaned the other day about the traffic and long lines and the weather, but it’s all in the holiday spirit.  So for those that celebrate and those that don’t go ahead crack open the egg nog and have yourselves a merry merry Christmas day.

The beauty is that you have the whole weekend to enjoy, so extend the party.  Share with your loved ones and may the spirit of the season be with you.

Holiday or not, there ain’t no stopping the doodles.  I just got done watching Julie & Julia and now that I am day 179 into my Doodle a Day project, I am more determined than ever to make sure that the doodles are seen and enjoyed.  If you stop by, send me a note, leave a comment let’s make “the doodle daily” the next julie/julia project.

May your special wish be sitting under your tree.

Because The Tree is featured in our Holiday Greeting cards section

I couldn’t count it as a unique doodle of the day and my promise was to post a new doodle every day

So in addition, I have this festive drawing as the Doodle of the day

Merry Christmas to all.

Wishing You all a very merry day

Day 177 – It’s beginning to look a lot like …

December 23rd, 2009 No comments

Tis the season to be jolly…… NOT!

People are crazy out there.  No one is Jolly, everyone is grumpy and rushing around trying to get their last minute shopping done.  They cut you off on the roads, they give you the finger…. Not nice people, it’s supposed to be a joyous time.  Maybe it’s because of the storm over the weekend that caused people to lose out on 2 very important shopping days….. but that doesn’t mean you have to turn into grinches…

That being said…. is all your shopping done.  Are you ready for the holiday?

Maybe this guy will help you get in the spirit of things….. because remember it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

It's beginning to look a like . . .

Day 176 – Snow turns to Ice

December 22nd, 2009 No comments

Another messy day out there as snow turns to slush turns to ice.  Schools are still closed.  This town comes to a standstill once the white stuff appears.  Our street is still an icy mess.  Did I say I love the snow?  I do, but only while it is falling.

oh well, forget the snow we have the holidays to look forward to and more importantly the Doodles to attend to.

Here’s what I have for you today.
