Day 754 – Amy Winehouse Gone at 27

July 24th, 2011 No comments

Yesterday we lost another musical icon at the tender age of 27.  In the past there have been so many musical greats that left us at 27.  Hendrix, Cobain, Joplin, Morrison and now Winehouse.  Why? We will never know! We don’t know for sure but it’s highly likely that somehow the fast life plagued with drugs and alcohol caught up with this incredible talent and all we can ask is why?  Why throw it all away?  You had the talent, you had the looks, you certainly had the chops and we will never know how great you could have been.  Now all we have are the memories and that haunting voice, may other’s learn from this.  Don’t let drugs and alcohol take it away, you all have a wonderful life to live…. Live it.  Enjoy it.

Day 615 – Parlotones in DC

March 7th, 2011 2 comments

Saturday night we saw the amazing “Parlotones” here in DC.  They are a fantastic South African band, whom I have featured several times on the blog.  They just started their second US tour so make a point of looking out for them around the country.  Here is a list of their Tour Dates.  It’s time that great South African music was heard  in the states.    I was fortunate to get to meet the guys last night (thanks in part to the power of twitter)

Their signature look is the black shirt with red tie…. so I had to put pen to paper and give the guys the doodle respect they deserve.

The Parlotones

They opened their set Saturday night with “Life Design” of their latest album “Stardust Galaxies” and eneded with “Push me to the Floor” and in between they entertained us with many of the hits from all of their earlier albums.  This is a band to watch out for.  Their music is infectious and they are captivating to watch live on stage.  Once you know their songs you can’t help but sing along.  The band are equally at home in a small intimate setting as they are in front of 10’s of 1000’s as was evident when they performed for the world at the Fifa Soccer World cup this past summer, in South Africa.

So look out for “The Parlotones” and let’s give them their US due.

Here are some shots from their performance at “The Red Palace” in Washington, DC

Day 460 – Cartoons a doodle

October 3rd, 2010 6 comments

I did these 3 Cartoon characters as part of a doodle challenge on twitter.  There is a site that asks to draw Cartoon characters from memory.  Some are easy, some a little harder.  Last week I attempted these 3, and they cam out a lot better than I thought they would.  It was also the first time that I had attempted to draw any cartoon caracters that were not my own original ideas.  So these guys will definitely make as part of our celebrity doodle series.

The first one I tried was Yosemite Sam.  I remembered the big mustache and he always had guns a blazing:

Yosemite Sam

Then the next day the challenge  was

Touche Turtle

I had no idea, but i figured it had to be a turtle for starters

then I heard he was a swashbuckling (3 musketeer) type turtle

so the hat and sword was a no-brainer

The 3rd quest I had was to do Barney Rubble from “The Flintstones”

and he was simple enough to draw

Live on WTOP Radio

Just finished my interview with Neal Augenstein at WTOP radio (103.5 FM) here in Washington DC.  They just played the first clip on air and I will post the actual piece as soon as it becomes available later today.

I had to be at the studio at 4:00 am this morning, so it was a pretty early start to the day.  One think I will say is that the commute is fantastic at that time.  I had the road all to myself.  I got to meet the morning news team Bruce Alan & Mike Moss and then sat down with Neal to be interviewed.  We chatted about the art of doodling and the types of drawings that I do and how relaxing and Zen like doodling can be.  I explained how you concentrate more when you are drawing, especially in meetings or on the phone.  I shared with them the different types of drawing I had done.

In preparation for my interview, I had taken a few quick sketches of the team including weather man Doug Hill & traffic queen Lisa Baden and put those images on greeting cards, which I will post here as well.  I gave each of them a set of card, which they really appreciated.

Day 425 – Challenge

August 29th, 2010 No comments

I got chatting with this incredible artist/Caricaturist Shari Warren (who’s last name, is my first name) on Twitter.  We got talking about Bravo TX and the various house wives shows.  well one thing let to another and we challenged each other to draw one of the wives.  Shari cam back with a really cool Danielle, which you can see here Shari Warren’s Danielle Drawing

Once Shari had posted heres the challenge was on and I had to get something posted this weekend.  So I also decided to take on one of the NJ Housewives.  We could pick from any of them.   I then took on Jacqueline Laurita and here it is.  I did Theresa as well, but hated the way she came out.

Here’s my housewisves of New Jesrey Doodle,  and please visit Shari’s amazing blog at shariwarren.com

Day 331 – American Idol Winner

May 27th, 2010 No comments

American Idol season 9 has come to an end.  The days of Simon on Idol are over and how cute was Paula.  In order to find out that Lee Dewyze won season 9 of Americal Idol, we had to endure 2 hours of one has been after another.  I though that Idol this year was aimed at the younger crowd. Well how many teens have even heard of Chicago, Joe Cocker or Hall and Oats.  Now don’t get me wrong I love(d) those guys,  but that was in the 70s and 80s.  These days Joe Cocker has no voice, Chicago were Pitchy and strained and Hall & Oats need a major image change.  Even 2 thirds of the BeeGees didn’t cut it.

And don’t get me started on Christina or Allanis….. Thank goodness we were at least treated to a very stunning looking Janet Jackson, with a once again slimmed down bod and cropped new hair.

As much as I liked Lee, during the season, he was not the worthy winner (Kris Alan all over again) Oh well just like last year the runner up will have the more successful career.

And Please….. do we still need to see the ridiculous acts resurface.  This is American Idol, not American Idiot.  William Hung’s 15 minutes was over years ago, we don’t need to be reminded.

Now that the season is over….. we still need a doodle for the day.  Be sure to check out the Simon Cowell & Ryan Seacrest doodles, I did a while back, but for today we have a non-idol doodle, but it does have a “musical” theme.

You might say, wait American Idol has been on for weeks, but last night the real Idol began with the performance shows.  When they go live that is when I start to get into the show. Last night was ladies night and tonight the guys perform.  So as a tribute to the Idol live shows, how could I not take on Simon, Ryan and co.

I already have done my Ellen doodle ( I still haven’t heard from her) so last night while the show was on, I put pen to paper and took on Simon & Ryan and here they are.  I have Simon #1 today…. with a Simon #2 coming up tomorrow.

So without further ado…. The official Simon Cowell & Ryan Seacrest Doodles.
