Day 1096 – Powerless!!!

June 30th, 2012 No comments

Today is the Doodle Daily’s 3rd anniversary.  This should be such an exciting day and I spent the entire day with no power.  We had a massive storm come through the DC area last night.  It was brief, but powerful and it knocked out power to over 1 million homes.  It’s now 10:30pm and we have just received power.

The event came out of no where around 10pm last night.  It had been a hot day record heat of 104 degrees, but it didn’t appear to be stormy.  It’s not like the sky got grey and a storm was brewing.  All of a sudden, the power went out, still no signs of an actual storm.  Then it got windy and then very windy and the heavens opened.    In a short time the storm blew through and without electricity we just went off to bed,  thinking this was just another summer thunderstorm.  We had no idea of the destruction that was going on outside.

This morning we took a drive into DC and it was amazing how wide spread the damage was.  Roads shut down.  Trees down almost everywhere.  there was debris at every turn.  It was a crazy site.  We went 24 hrs without power and we are lucky, because we were being told it might be a week before the power would come back on.

So as excited as I was to get my 3rd anniversary doodle up, I sure wasn’t counting on such a long delay.  The most important thing is that I am still able to post this on Jun 30th and keep the daily streak going.

Here then is the daily doodle 3rd anniversary doodle:

Day 1095 – African Eve

It’s the eve of “The Doodle Daily’s” 3rd anniversary.  A feat I still can’t believe I have achieved.  More on the big day tomorrow.  Here’s is part 3 of the African Art doodles and it is quite fitting.  The 2 ladies looking off into the sunset, symbolic of the sun setting on year 3.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed drawing it.

Day 1093 – South African Art

June 27th, 2012 No comments

For some time now I have wanted to do a doodle tribute to some of the  South African art that I knew growing up.  I have several pieces scattered throughout the house and finally got around to making an attempt at my doodled interpretation.

The first artist I explored was Benjamin Mzimkulu (or Ben Macala as he is more commonly known)  I always loved his work.  The wide eyes a constant feature and the soft pastel colors always warm and comforting.  I have a couple of these to share.  The first I did all in black and white and the second had the traditional Ben Macala soft pastel coloring (I’ll post that as tomorrow’s doodle).  Below is brief history of the artist known as “Ben Macala” along with an image of one of his works.

Ben Macala Doodle Tribute

Benjamin Mzimkulu (Ben) Macala, SA artist, is born in Bloemfontein.   As a young boy he tended cattle on a farm in the Orange Free State and drew on the rocks with stones. He is largely self-taught although in 1964 he studied for a few months under Cecil Skotnes at Jubilee Art Centre, was guided by Ephraim Ngatane in 1965 and 1966 and was a pupil of Bill Ainslie for a short time. In 1980 he travelled to Greece.  He held thirteen exhibitions from 1967-1985 in SA, Europe and the USA.

Day 1090 – Life Lessons

June 24th, 2012 No comments

I spent a good deal of time scanning in recent drawings yesterday, when all of a sudden, the ghosts in the machine took over and my system seized up on me.  I left and went about my business the rest of the day.  By the time I was able to get the scanner and CPU to start talking to each other all was gone.  Not a single image was saved.  Luckily all was not lost (only time) as I have all the drawings on paper.  So now I will have to do it all over again (at a more decent hour, it’s 1:27 am right now) The irony is that this drawing was the one I was to scan in next and it reminded me so much of a lesson being taught, that I had no choice but to make it today’s doodle.

You can read so much into this drawing.  From an artistic standpoint I had intended for the butterflies to be in black and white and have them surround in burst of color, as a contrast to the way butterflies are in real life.  But when I finished it off, all I could see was the “life lesson” being taught and the background of color wasn’t needed after all.  The simplicity of the drawing conveys a much stronger message.  We all need some parental advice from time to time, to learn from our elders and realize that mistakes are just that, nothing wrong with picking back up the next day.

I hope you like this one as much as I do. (and with that I am off to bed, it’s now 1:45 am, good morning!)

Day 1089 – Stormy Stormy Nite

June 23rd, 2012 No comments

This Heatwave had to break eventually and it did with spate of powerful storms that made it through the area.  The as quickly as they arrived they moved out.  Still Muggy, but hopefully the next few days will be pleasant and not near as hot.
